Robert Browning Elementary is one of several schools opened in the Heights area in the late 1920s as the City of Houston expanded from the banks of Buffalo Bayou.
Today, the campus is filled with trees planted by our first principal. In the late 1990s, the concept of educating through nature was revived. Landscaped courtyards under those original trees encourage time for reflection. Vegetable gardens and native habitats near the SPARK park allow students to learn from and interact with nature during play time.
Throughout the lushly planted 6-acre campus are works of art from Browning’s collaboration with environmental organizations which allow students to study the environment and Gulf Coast ecosystems, and then express what they have learned through the arts.
Along with nature studies, the nurturing staff uses many creative teaching methods throughout the school day to foster a lifelong love for learning in our students.
Browning offers many enrichment and after school classes that challenge and promote higher-level thinking skills throughout all class work. The sprawling campus provides many play spaces as well as room for students to explore and learn through their natural surroundings.
Browning’s Programs include: Robotics, Science Fair, Outdoor Classes, UIL Competition, Keyboard and Choir, Basketball, Soccer, Student Newspaper and After School Program.
Browning Elementary School recently received the highest rating of "Exemplary" as reported by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in their 2009 Accountability Ratings. The ratings data posted by the TEA tracks the academic achievement of school campuses statewide. The new rating is exciting news for our community! This achievement clearly represents a success of not only the school as a whole, but of the individual students as well.
Browning Elementary is a community that ensures learning for all in a respectful…successful…innovative…nurturing…and safe environment.
